Nestled in the serene rural surroundings of the Byndoor taluk in Udupi district, the Sri Eshwara and Marikamba Temple is a prominent center of religious and cultural devotion for local residents. Set amidst lush greenery and the tranquil natural beauty of the coastal region, this sacred site serves as an important sanctuary dedicated to both Lord Shiva and the divine mother.
Inside the sanctum sanctorum, Bhagwan Shiva is worshipped as Sri Eshwara alongside the fierce and protective form of the divine mother, Sri Marikamba, residing within the same religious complex. Marikamba is revered with deep devotion as a guardian deity of the local village, believed to dispel the hardships of her devotees and bestow health and prosperity. During annual festivals and special worship days, hundreds of devotees from surrounding villages gather here to seek the divine blessings of both deities.

Kalavady Sri Eshwara Marikamba Temple is a traditional temple in the Byndoor region, situated along the Byndoor–Kollur route. The shrine is dedicated to Sri Eshwara and Sri Marikamba, and its identity is closely connected with the religious traditions and cultural life of the surrounding villages.
One of the distinctive features of Kalavady is its setting. The temple stands near the Sumanavathi River, with the river and the surrounding greenery forming an important part of the character of this sacred place. The combination of an old coastal temple tradition, the river landscape and the cultural traditions associated with the shrine makes Kalavady different from many other temples in the Byndoor area.
The two principal deities give the temple its name and religious identity.
Sri Eshwara is worshipped here as Lord Shiva, while Sri Marikamba represents the powerful Mother Goddess worshipped in the traditional coastal Karnataka style. The presence of both deities reflects the way Shaiva worship and the worship of village goddesses have developed together in the region.
Marikamba temples traditionally hold an important place in the religious life of coastal villages. Devotees come to Kalavady not only for regular worship but also during the temple's special rituals and annual observances.
The Sumanavathi River is one of the most noticeable natural features near Kalavady Temple. The temple's location beside the river gives the surrounding area a distinctive combination of sacred and natural landscape.
The river is especially relevant to understanding the setting of the temple. Instead of being an isolated shrine surrounded only by buildings, Kalavady is part of a wider landscape of water, vegetation and settlements.
During the rainy season, the river and surrounding greenery take on a different character, while the temple continues to remain a focal point for local religious activities.
For visitors exploring the Byndoor–Kollur side, the Sumanavathi River adds another interesting dimension to a visit to Kalavady.
Kalavady Sri Eshwara Marikamba Temple has a long-standing local religious tradition. The present temple has also undergone major renovation, including the rebuilding of the shrine in stone and renovation of the sanctum.
The renovation culminated in consecration-related religious ceremonies, with devotees and members of the local community taking an active role in the restoration of the temple. The new stone structure has given the shrine a renewed appearance while continuing the worship associated with the older temple.
This connection between an older religious tradition and a newly renewed temple structure is an important part of Kalavady's present identity.
The temple's annual religious calendar includes traditional observances such as Gendaseve and Haluhabba.
These occasions bring devotees from the surrounding villages to the temple. Special worship, offerings and community activities are conducted as part of the celebrations. Annasantarpane is also associated with the temple's annual observances.
Such festivals are important not only as religious events but also as occasions when families and local communities come together at the temple.
Perhaps the most distinctive cultural connection of Kalavady Temple is its association with Yakshagana.
The temple has traditionally supported the Sri Eshwara Marikamba Kripaposhita Yakshagana Mandali, a Yakshagana troupe associated with the temple. The troupe had a long history of performances in the coastal region before its touring activities stopped for several decades.
The Yakshagana tradition was later revived, bringing the Kalavady troupe back into the cultural life of the region. The revival included temple-based rituals such as Gejje Seve, followed by performances and touring programmes.
This is particularly significant because Yakshagana is not simply a form of entertainment in coastal Karnataka. It is closely connected with temple traditions, devotional culture and village communities. Kalavady therefore represents an example of how a temple can continue to serve as a centre for both religious worship and traditional performing arts.
Kalavady's importance comes from the way several elements come together in one place: Eshwara worship, Marikamba tradition, the Sumanavathi River, annual temple observances and Yakshagana.
The temple's connection with the surrounding community can be seen during its religious programmes, when local families participate in worship and service activities. The renovation of the temple has further strengthened this connection, with devotees contributing to the preservation of the shrine.
The temple is therefore closely tied to the cultural identity of the surrounding villages rather than being simply a standalone place of worship.
The Byndoor–Kollur region gradually changes from the coastal landscape towards the Western Ghats. Kalavady lies within this transition zone, where rivers, agricultural land, settlements and forested hills form the broader landscape.
The Sumanavathi River is particularly important to the character of the area. Its presence near the temple gives visitors an opportunity to see the relationship between traditional religious sites and the natural geography of coastal Karnataka.
This setting also makes Kalavady different from temples located in heavily built-up areas. The temple remains connected to the landscape around it.
Kalavady Sri Eshwara Marikamba Temple stands out for its combination of religious tradition and local cultural heritage.
Its main highlights include:
The Yakshagana connection gives the temple a particularly strong cultural identity, while the Sumanavathi River provides an important natural element to its surroundings.
If you are exploring the lesser-known religious and cultural places around Byndoor, Kalavady is a destination that brings together several aspects of the region in one location.
The temple represents the continuing worship of Eshwara and Marikamba. The Sumanavathi River forms part of its natural setting. The annual temple traditions connect it with local families and devotees, while Yakshagana links the shrine with one of coastal Karnataka's best-known performing arts.
That combination is what makes Kalavady Sri Eshwara Marikamba Temple a distinctive cultural landmark of Byndoor—a temple where the river, worship, community traditions and coastal performing arts remain closely connected.
